The heart of the machine

I created this project for The Rookies’ monthly challenge.
The theme was “Power Cell: Model a core device, charging station, living reactor, or exposed power unit.”
I wanted to take part in this challenge to practice hard surface modeling, lighting, and compositing in Photoshop.
I would have liked to showcase more hard surface work, but I plan to create another project with that focus.
Here’s my Rookies post, where you can see

Description

Lighting Designer | 10+ Years of Experience

I’m a Lighting Designer with over 15 years of experience creating dynamic lighting environments for a variety of media, including film, video games, theater, and live events. My expertise lies in using lighting to enhance storytelling, set moods, and guide audience focus. I have worked across multiple industries and am well-versed in both creative and technical aspects of lighting design.

Core Skills:

  • Lighting Design & Execution

  • Cinematic Lighting

  • Real-Time Lighting (Unreal Engine, Unity)

  • 3D Visualization & Rendering (Maya, 3ds Max)

  • Lighting for Virtual Production & XR

  • Team Collaboration & Direction

Selected Projects:

  1. Project A: Feature Film Lighting Design
Designed lighting for a feature film, focusing on natural light and shadow play to complement the narrative’s emotional tone. Collaborated closely with the director and cinematographer to create a visually immersive experience.

  2. Project B: Video Game Environment Lighting
Led lighting design for an open-world RPG, working within Unreal Engine to craft realistic lighting systems that reflected different times of day and weather conditions. The goal was to create atmospheric, dynamic lighting that enhanced the player's immersion in the world.

  3. Project C: Live Concert Lighting
Designed and implemented stage lighting for a large-scale live concert tour, developing a lighting scheme that synchronized with the music and performance dynamics. Focused on creating dramatic effects and enhancing the overall visual experience for the audience.

Approach to Lighting Design:

My approach to lighting design is rooted in storytelling. Whether I’m lighting a film scene, a video game level, or a live event, my goal is to create lighting that supports and elevates the narrative. I pay close attention to how light and shadow interact within a space, and how they can be used to evoke emotions and highlight key elements of the scene.

Technology is also a big part of my process. I’m proficient in using both traditional lighting techniques and modern digital tools to achieve the desired visual effects. In recent years, I’ve expanded my skills to virtual and real-time lighting, leveraging engines like Unreal Engine and Unity to create fully interactive and immersive lighting systems.

Philosophy:

Lighting is not just about visibility; it’s about atmosphere, mood, and impact. Over the years, I’ve refined my ability to balance technical precision with creative vision. I aim to make every light placement purposeful, ensuring that the lighting not only supports the visual story but also enhances the overall user or viewer experience.
